Would that get your interest?

If so, I urge you to keep reading as what you are about to learn can make you a much better skier in much less time!

The 40-Year-Old Beginning Ski Instructor …

Tim-Harper Before I tell you how you can dramatically improve your skiing or if you haven’t skied before how to quickly become better than those who have been trying to learn on their own for years, let me tell you a little about myself.

My name is Tim Harper. I’m now a BASI qualified ski instructor and an Austrian Anwarter Prufung ski instructor but here’s the thing – I didn’t even get into skiing until I was in my early 40’s.

It’s true. I actually first got into skiing by accident. A group of friends were all going on a ski holiday and they invited me along.

I figured I would go but spend the majority of my time in the Aprez bars socializing. I wasn’t really interested in skiing at that time.

But then when I got there I realized that during the day just about everybody was out on the slopes leaving me with nothing to do.

So I decided to give it a go – and it ended up changing my life.

Not at first mind you. At first, I spent most of my time falling. But I kept at it and after a few days I was able to ski down some blue runs.

I’ll never forget being on a blue run and starting to make some turns.  I could hear the noise of the spray coming off my skis behind me as I was making the turns and I looked around and saw the shadow of the spray against the sun and I just remember thinking, “Wow, how cool is this!” This is what I see these expert skiers doing.  At that moment I became hooked.

I wanted to get more and more of that spray coming off my skis. I wanted to live that moment again and again.

Have you been to the slopes and seen good skiers making perfect turns down a mountain? Have you seen professional skiers doing it on TV? It is such a rush, few things in the world compare. That’s why I strongly recommend that everybody learn how to ski. It adds such fun and excitement to your life!

Of course, you can’t just get a pair of skis and boots and start skiing like a pro – there are certain fundamentals, certain skills that you must learn first.

You don’t want to make the same mistakes I did …

When I Started Out, I Didn’t Have Any Lessons

I thought I would just progress naturally.  That was a big mistake.

I ended up picking up a lot of bad habits.  Eventually, I was able to ski down any run but my technique was terrible. I can only imagine how out of control I must have looked to other skiers. It’s a wonder I didn’t injure myself.

But I didn’t and I kept on skiing because I loved it so much. I loved everything about it – from the breathtaking scenic views to the adrenaline rush as you speed down a slope to the whooshing sound that my skies made as they glided on the snow.

That’s why I kept going on ski holidays as often as I could.

Then one day I was on a chair lift with my 2 sons and some friends and we watched a ski instructor.  He was on his own coming down a long sweeping red run.

He was right in front of us and we sat there and watched in awe as he perfectly skid underneath us and disappeared into the distance. He was carving and making perfect tracks all the way down.  He was like God on skis. I mean he was incredible.  Everybody said “Wow, I wish I could ski like that. How awesome would it be to be able to ski like that?”

The way he was skiing was exactly how I wanted to be able to ski – and I made it my mission to be able to do it.

I didn’t care that I was in my 40’s, I wanted to feel that rush of being able to ski really, really well. As soon as I got back to the UK, I started looking into how to become a ski instructor and soon enough I started the journey.

I was determined and I persevered. It wasn’t all plain sailing but eventually I got there.  Like I said earlier, I’m now a BASI qualified ski instructor and an Austrian Anwarter Prufung ski instructor.

If I can become a ski instructor after first going skiing in my 40’s, you can learn to be a good skier no matter how old you are or what your experience level.

It’s time to take up skiing – or get much better at it – so that you can fill you life with fun and excitement.

Having been a late starter to skiing in my mid to late 40’s, with not much opportunity to go on a regular basis, I was keen to learn. Ski-ing with my husband who has for many years gone regularly with his 4 children, all of whom have had the chance to ski since about age 7 and needless to say, are all very proficient was a daunting prospect.

I had a first lesson and was doing well, the instructor in France suggesting I could go on to the wider blue runs, which I felt very happy with, however, as I couldn’t work out the runs on the map, for some reason my husband thought it would be fun to take me on some of the more challenging narrower blue runs. This totally ruined the rest of my trip as I was totally out of my comfort zone and we had a blazing argument coming down the very narrow part of the run and after that I stuck on the very low, wide green or nursery runs. It was suggested we go again at the end of the year for my husband’s significant birthday and I was filled with dread.

I thought I have to do something! Finding Tim’s videos online, more by accident than search, I thought I would investigate. They were very reasonably priced and having watched them all, I have to say that they are clear and concise with simple and easy to understand explanations of techniques with examples to watch and practice.

I had the proverbial light bulb moment while watching basic skills, and I feel I either missed taking them on board or they were never explained properly to me. Many instructors miss passing on often the simplest techniques to a real beginner, possibly because they are doing it all day.

Thanks to these short, easy to understand videos, I am determined to find a slope to practice on and can only thank Tim for giving me the knowledge and techniques in such a simple way so I can practice and give me back my confidence.

I would be happy to recommend them to anyone who feels as I did, or is a complete novice.

Terina Worrall

As you advised I watched your videos over and over to get that positioning in my head for creating the C shape. It was 100 mile journey to ski centre so I used the time to think about how I would put into practice and how I would start to execute my turns. I started with going back to snowplough turns and after a short time I made my turns tighter so I was just using the centre of the slope trying to keep it tight as I really wanted to ski like the pros. Ha ha . I kept going up and down for an hour and 20 mins then I heard the noise! That noise you described in your video, about being on the slopes and the spray behind. The noise I heard was me, my skies cutting into the slope as I was turning with a little speed. I think at one stage I got to the bottom and I punched the air above I was so pleased ,and went straight back up again. As you know I’m along way off perfect but I had a great time. Thanks for all your help!
